Anthony W. Riecke scrapbooks, ca. 1860-1886.

Three scrapbooks containing clippings and prints, collected and organized by Anthony W. Riecke. Each volume contains an index. Volume 1 contains articles about history and local events in Charleston, South Carolina and the surrounding region. Significant Charleston events include riots, the elections of 1876, the cyclone of 1885, the earthquake of 1886, Gala Week (1886), and "the mid-winter exposition of 1902" (South Carolina Inter-State and West Indian Exposition color supplement from the New York World, Feb 16 [1902]). Additional items of interest include a large cartoon (in color, between p. 34 and 35) depicting a wounded Charleston after the 1886 earthquake, an article on the German Fusilier Company, and articles about African American and German South Carolinians. The volume also includes prints from two pamphlets (Moss Engraving Co. and Photo Engraving Co.) depicting cyclone and earthquake destruction in and around Charleston. Volumes 2 and 3 contain clippings about the Civil War and Reconstruction.
